Intel Corp., on Tuesday announced three new chips, part of a low-end product line called Quark, along with software and technology specifications to help customers jump on a highly competitive trend called the Internet of Things – One of the Quark chips announced on Tuesday, for example, includes built-in, pattern-matching circuitry to identify anomalies in information arriving from external sensors, the company said. The Quark chips are also designed to work in extremely high and low temperatures. In selling microcontrollers, Intel is going up against an array of entrenched competitors, including Freescale Semiconductor Inc. and Atmel Corp. Another tough aspect of the market is pricing. Where Intel sells many chips that sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars, IoT applications demand much lower costs. The D1000 will start at $2 to $3, depending on volume, with pricing expected to decrease over time, Intel said.
Intel didn’t disclose pricing for a second Quark chip, dubbed the D2000, which is expected at the end of the year, or a third called the Quark SE SoC for IoT, which is expected in the first half of 2016.
